Summary
Undeb Aberystwyth should commit to policies that protect and support trans, intersex, and gender-nonconforming students through advocacy, inclusive language, and resistance to exclusionary practices.
Details
On April 16, 2025, the UK Supreme Court upheld the biological definition of ‘sex’ in the Equality Act 2010, continuing the discrimination against trans, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals. This ruling deepens concerns among our community and allies. As an Undeb, we are committed to fostering a welcoming, inclusive environment where everyone feels safe. We stand with our LGBTQ+ friends and allies, reaffirming our support and dedication to equity. This decision highlights the uncertain future for LGBTQ+ individuals, making our ongoing commitment to inclusion more vital than ever.
Our Students' Union believes that gender identity should not be determined by biological sex and uphold inclusive definitions of gender, recognising and respecting trans students and self-identification in all aspects of Students’ Union activity.
Undeb Aberystwyth will:
- Fight for the rights of trans and intersex people - Campaigning directly, and supporting our members to campaign locally and Nationally to change the ruling.
- Promote and encourage the use of more inclusive gender definitions locally and Nationally. Advocating for organisations to adopt fully inclusive policies that embrace all genders and identity expressions.
- Resist any implementation of any rules relating to gender that are not inclusive of trans and intersex people.
- Recognise the mental and potentially physical harm that this ruling brings to our members. We will proactively support trans and intersex students to access support.
- Recognise the exhaustion and distress created by campaigning for your own rights and that the SU has a direct role to campaign for changes that benefit our members while empowering impacted students to campaign where they choose to.
We can never be complacent about the rights that we have.
