Who are Volunteer Officers?
Volunteer Officers are students who have been elected by fellow students across the university to feedback the views of those they represent to the Union, University and the wider community both regionally and nationally.
Each Volunteer Officer has a specific responsibility, with some representing specific groups of students. Therefore, only students who identify into these groups can stand and vote for the position. For example, only students who self-identify as a woman can stand and/or vote for Women’s Officer.
Responsibilities of all Volunteer Officers
- To attend all appropriate Undeb Aberystwyth and University meetings including Senedd Meetings and Forums.
- To act in a professional and appropriate manner always.
- To ensure that all decisions and actions are taken in line with the Undeb Aberystwyth constitution and current Undeb Aberystwyth policy.
- To be prepared to report on the progress of the work under their remit.
- To regularly meet and liaise with relevant Officer Trustees and staff members.
- To attend relevant meet and greets throughout the year.
- To attend all training relevant to their role.

Becoming a Volunteer Officer
Why should I become a Volunteer Officer?
- We believe that the student voice matters and work to ensure students views, needs and concerns shape your University, Students’ Union and Community both regionally and nationally. By becoming a Volunteer Officer, you will have been elected by fellow students and therefore who better to represent their views?
- You will develop new and existing skills, enhance your employability and join a network of like-minded students involved with the Students Union.
- As well as receiving a certificate, you will have the chance to be nominated for an award at our Celebrates Awards.
How can I become a Volunteer Officer?
- Elections take place in March each year for the forthcoming academic year; these are held alongside the elections for our Faculty Reps and Full-time Officers. Where positions are unelected, a by-election will be held early in the new academic year (usually October or November) to fill vacant positions.

What training and support is provided?
- All Volunteer Officers are invited to attend training before the start of term one in September. Those unable to attend or elected at a later date will be invited to attend an alternative session.
- As well as training, you’ll receive dedicated support from the Campaigns and Democracy Coordinator, meeting monthly during term-time to discuss feedback, listen to any concerns and provide ongoing support should you need it.
- You may also have the opportunity to attend regional and national conferences to meet reps and Officers from other institutions.
