Although Wales has special folk music, the Welsh music scene has so much more to offer and this is the purpose of Cymru Music Day.
Welsh music is not a genre of its own; from rap to reggae, from blues to rock, the Welsh music scene opens doors to all kinds of genres. The Welsh music scene continues to flourish with Welsh music being seen all over the world, from local stages to Glastonbury and beyond the borders of the United Kingdom.
The first Welsh rock band was founded in Aberystwyth, Y Blew, in 1967. Since then, Aberystwyth has been at the center of the Welsh music scene with a number of Welsh artists who are former UMCA members - for example the alternative folk singer Geraint Lövgreen, the post-punk band Mellt and members of the band Dros Dro - who won Wales' biggest composition competition, Cân i Gymru, in 2025.
Now, a number of Welsh gigs are held at the Cwps in the town but UMCA also organizes gigs throughout the year including the Intercollegiate Dance - an annual event in Aberystwyth for Welsh students across the whole of Wales which gives a stage to some of Wales' biggest bands in the Aber Union building.
