Diwrnod Santes Dwynwen

Instead of celebrating the English Valentine, the people of Wales celebrate Saint Dwynwen's Day, which is the patron saint of Welsh lovers.

The History

Although many elements of Dwynwen's history are rooted in Celtic legends, it is believed that she was the daughter of Brychan Brycheiniog. According to the story, although Dwynwen loved a man called Maelon, it was not possible for her to marry Maelon because her father had made a promise that she would marry another man.

In her heartbreak, Dwynwen prayed to God to free her from her love for Maelon. Then, she dreams that Maelon is frozen into a chunk of ice and so, she prays again begging God for three things; that he thawed Maelor; that he took care of all the lovers of Wales; and that he ensured that Dwynwen would never marry.

Ultimately, Dwynwen's wishes were realized and she became the patron saint of lovers in Wales. According to legend, she went to live as a nun on Llanddwyn Island, near Anglesey, where it is still possible to visit her today and it is possible to explore the ruins of her church on the island.

The Celebrations

Every year, a colorful parade is held along the streets of Aberystwyth to celebrate Saint Dwynwen's day with a traditional Welsh dance, Twmpath, to end the afternoon.
