New Club and Society Spotlight: Aber Phoenix

AberPhoenix is a safe space for survivors of rape, harassment, and other forms of abuse, but we also welcome members that don't have these experiences. We hold a variety of socials, and plan to fundraise for charities that support survivors.

Why was the club/society set up?

Many spaces for survivors are very selective in terms of gender or specifics of trauma and we wanted a space where nobody was excluded. It is important to us that survivors are self-identifying, and that there are no barriers to anyone who wants to join.

What inspired you to set up this club/society? // What inspired you to get involved?

As survivors ourselves, we were finding it difficult to find support in a place as isolated as Aberystwyth. We also know how taboo it can be to discuss these experiences, despite how common they are. With this in mind, we created AberPhoenix to help signpost the support that is available and provide a space where survivors can discuss their experiences without judgement.

What have you got planned for the new academic year?

Our priority next year will be to start fundraising for charities that support survivors. We have also been approached by Not on My Campus UK, who will help us get involved with nationwide fundraising and awareness campaigns.

What has been the best part setting up a new club/society? // What has been the best part of getting involved with a new club/society?

By far the best part has been doing something positive with our traumatic experiences, and meeting others who are doing the same. It has been really encouraging to see so many people, especially survivors, who recognise how important a space like AberPhoenix is.

What did you find to be the biggest challenge when starting a new club/society? // What did you find to be the biggest challenge to getting involved with a new club/society?

The biggest challenge has been adapting to socially distant times; like everyone else, we’ve had to get creative in order to still hold socials. We were only fully operational for three weeks before lockdown, so reaching people has been difficult.
