Who Are We?
Our society is for all those who love Harry Potter. As long as you love the Wizarding World, we'll happily have you- no matter your stance on any characters, whether you prefer the films to the books or vice versa! We primarily use social media and this page, so make sure to keep an eye on them to stay up-to-date with all our magical shenanigans. If you decide upon our society as one you want to join (thank you!), our membership is free, but you need to make sure you get Team Aber Insurance (very important!).
Socials
We hold loosely themed pub crawls once a fortnight on a Tuesday evening in town, from 7-10pm. Once a fortnight on the alternating Thursday, we hold sober socials in the Student's Union on campus- these vary from film screenings to games nights, and anything in between! One Saturday a month, we hold a cafe social, where we visit a cafe in town for lunch. Members are free to attend as many or as few socials as they wish, and no theme is mandatory- there is no pressure to participate in dressing up if it makes you uncomfortable, our chief aim is for everyone to enjoy themselves! We announce our events on our social pages, but feel free to email us to find out what we have going on! We also have a mailing list which is free to join on the SU webpage!
Inclusivity Statement
The Aberystwyth Potterheads are dedicated to the inclusion and acceptance of all members- regardless of age, race, ethnicity, ability, culture or nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religion, socioeconomic, or marital status.
We would additionally like to make clear that our society does not agree with or endorse the views held by author J.K. Rowling. We encourage members to purchase unofficial merchandise, and we use our RAG week to raise money for Stonewall, a charity who do excellent work for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Committee
President- Helen Turnock
Hi everyone! I’m Helen, a third year English Literature and Creative Writing student, and your President for the 2024-25 Academic Year. I'm a Ravenclaw and I identify most with book Hermione Granger, although my favourite is probably Ginny Weasley. I'm looking forward to hopefully growing the society this year, and meeting fellow Harry Potter enthusiasts! In what little spare time I have, I am an avid reader, and I play a lot of hockey.
Social Secretary- Alex Birkinshaw
Hi everybody, I'm Alex, Social Secretary for the Potterheads this year. I'm a third year Creative Writing student, and a proud Slytherin. My favourite character has to be Minerva McGonagall, the icon that she is. I'm looking forward to meeting everybody in September, whether at the Fresher's Fair or one of our socials. And, in the words of Jacob Kowalski: "I'm the only one like me."
Treasurer- Isabel Lakeman
Hey guys! I'm Isabel, a second year Environmental Science student, and your Treasurer for this Academic Year. I'm a Ravenclaw who identifies most with Luna Lovegood, but I also hold a soft spot for Tonks. In my spare time, I'm keen on photographing nature when I go on walks, and I listen to music and read.
Welfare Officer- Anna Penwell
Hi, I'm Anna, and I'm a third year student of English Literature and Creative Writing. This year, I'm going to be the new Wellbeing and Inclusivity Officer, and I can't wait to start back in September, to meet more people who love Harry Potter!
