AberSU have secured a £23,000 grant to provide Resilience Skills and Suicide Prevention training to students and staff.

The new grant has been awarded by the National Lottery Community Fund, which distributes money raised by lottery players to good causes.

The grant will enable the Students’ Union to deliver interactive workshops to students and university staff on Resilience Skills and Suicide Prevention.

The project begins in early April with external trainers delivering initially to Union staff and two groups of students before returning over the summer to deliver a train the trainer to allow staff to deliver regular sessions from October.

We’ll be working closely with the University’s Student Support and Careers Services to ensure students who are in need continue to have access to appropriate wellbeing support where needed while ensuring the training complements existing provision.

Molly-Jean Longden, Wellbeing Officer, said:

“I’m incredibly excited for us to start rolling this out to our students and staff, particularly our Clubs and Societies who have been asking for additional training in these areas.

It is even more important because it will allow us to give all students and staff ways in which to help each other cope and the skills to deal with the situations that come with being a student.”

Rachel Richards, Funding Officer at The National Lottery Community Fund said:

“Aberystwyth Student Union put in a strong application which showed they had listened to the students and staff at the University and proposed a project which addressed the issues these groups felt were important to them.

They will use the grant to try to encourage students to access the services on offer rather than dropping out or suffering in silence.  We welcome the increased interest in positive mental health and we look forward to seeing how the team at Aberystwyth develop this project.”

The initial sessions coming up in April are now fully booked.
