What committee are you part of and what roles have you held?
I am currently the President of Aberystwyth University Tennis Club, and have also been the Social Secretary for the last two years.
What made you want to run for a committee role?
I wanted to take on more responsibility and have a direct impact on the running of the club to help make it an enjoyable and friendly experience for other students.
What has been the most enjoyable part of being on committee?
As a committee member you get to meet new and potential members and help show them the ropes, and is very satisfying seeing your hard work pay off; for example securing extra sessions for the club, or even new facilities to help improve the experience of the whole club.
Can you tell us about a time where your role was challenging?
For the most part, being on the committee hasn’t presented too many challenges, as we all worked well together. However, at the start of the pandemic we were still using the town tennis courts and we had a few disagreements with them about finances and times we were allowed to book their tennis courts. As a committee we had to make the decision whether to stay with them or see if we could find facilities of our own. As President you get to have the deciding vote when the committee vote ends in a tie and although it was daunting at first, I made the decision to find other facilities to host our club sessions. This presented us with many challenges in the shape of new membership prices and how we could make the new facilities playable etc. but by working as a team, and with the support of the SU and the Sports Centre, we have managed to get everything worked out.
Do you feel that being on a committee has been beneficial in terms of preparing you for the future?
Yes, definitely! Being on committee helps to develop transferable skills such as team work and leadership, and it looks great on your CV for future employers.
What piece of advice would you give to an incoming committee member?
My advice is to make sure you’re organised so that you can plan early for events such as freshers fair and to make sure you work with your whole committee taking their thoughts into account. As we can start to see the end of the pandemic, it gives a lot of opportunities to make your clubs the best they can be, so make the most of the time now to plan potential sessions and events.
