What committee are you part of and what roles have you held?
I am affiliated with 2 societies: Aberystwyth Conservation Volunteers (ACV) and Fantasy & Sci-Fi Soc (SF&FS). I have been Social and Publicity Officer of ACV and Secretary of SF&FS. I am currently Secretary of ACV and President of SF&FS.
What made you want to run for a committee role?
I ran for Secretary of ACV as this will benefit my future career - the skills I’ve gained and contacts I’ve met complement my degree and future career aspirations of working within the environmental sector. I chose to become part of SF&FS committee, as this appeases my nerdy side, plus I wished to keep this tiny society going and add my input upon my choice of the fantasy genre.
What has been the most enjoyable part of being on committee?
Meeting likeminded people - whether this be out in the field fascinating over a rare plant in ACV, or watching a film and highlighting all the nerdy points to each other in SF&FS.
Can you tell us about a time where your role was challenging?
ACV usually throws up many challenges, from dealing with organising tasks with external parties, to working out which bus will get you to a nature reserve in the middle of nowhere!
Do you feel that being on a committee has been beneficial in terms of preparing you for the future?
As previously mentioned, my time with ACV will greatly prepare me for my future career, through the skills and contacts gained. However, my learnt skills from being a committee member go beyond that, including a variety of soft transferable skills, such as leadership, teamworking, communication and time management, as gained from both societies.
What piece of advice would you give to an incoming committee member?
Don’t be scared to open up and share issues and problems you may face once on a committee - to your fellow committee or wider members. Societies are their own wonderful family- someone will have the skill set or knowledge and answer to your problem.
