What committee are you part of and what roles have you held?

We are both committee members of Aberystwyth Mountaineering Club, President and Vice President

What made you want to run for a committee role?

We wanted to help give back to the club, as we’d had some of the best uni experiences with the club, and we wanted to give new members the same incredible experiences and opportunities we had.

What has been the most enjoyable part of being on committee?

Being able to pass on our knowledge to new members and giving people new experiences they’ve never had before, like abseiling or climbing for the first time.

Can you tell us about a time where your role was challenging?

With having a big wave of freshers at the start of the year, it was challenging to organise our first couple of socials in accordance with the covid regulations and make sure everyone understood the importance of abiding by them. We also faced the challenge of keeping some of our committee members motivated in their roles when covid stopped socials, competitions and trips that would have normally occurred.

Do you feel that being on a committee has been beneficial in terms of preparing you for the future?

Ben: It has shown me the best way to manage large groups of people at the same time and the importance of working well as a team to overcome difficult situations.

Callum: Leading and teaching groups outdoors has benefited me greatly, since I myself want to pursue a career within the outdoor industry post university.

What piece of advice would you give to an incoming committee member?

As important as it is to have a strong committee to lead the way and teach future members, try not to take things too seriously. It’s a university club and you are meant to be having your best years with it. Live, Laugh, Love, Climb.
