A huge congratulations to Aberystwyth University’s Welsh speaking students who competed in the Intercollege Eisteddfod held in Swansea this weekend.

They return to Aberystwyth with the shield and title of champions of the Intercollege Eisteddfod for the first time since 2015.

The Intercollege Eisteddfod, which travels around Wales each year towards the end of February, is one of the highlights in Wales’s Welsh speaking students’ calendar. Students represent their university in a variety of competitions on stage or work done beforehand (a few traditional Eisteddfod competitions and the odd fun competition like ‘Bing Bong’ etc) to win the most marks, and the Eisteddfod shield.

Elain Gwynedd, the Welsh Culture Officer and UMCA President said ‘It is truly a privilege for us in Aberystwyth to be crowned champions of the Intercollege Eisteddfod this year, particularly with it being a special year as we celebrate half a century since the founding of UMCA.

‘I’m so proud of all the members for their dedication and passion for bringing the shield back to the college by the sea. I would also like to thank the Conductors and Accompanists of Aelwyd Pantycelyn – Dafydd, Mari, Fflur, Efa, Celt and Gwenno for all their hard work in preparing for the Eisteddfod. A heartfelt thanks also to Swansea University for organising the Eisteddfod and for the warm welcome, without a doubt it’ll be a moment that I’ll never forget. UMCA are looking forward to welcoming the Intercollege Eisteddfod to Aberystwyth in 2025, and hopefully we’ll take the prize one more time!’

Congratulations to all the students who represented Aberystwyth this year, especially the following for arriving top in some of the day’s main competitions:

Winner of the Eisteddfod Crown– Rebecca Rees, Aberystwyth University.

Winner of the Eisteddfod Chair – Nanw Maelor, Aberystwyth University.

Winner of the Art Medal – Nia Williams, Aberystwyth University.

Winner of the Science Medal – Fflur Edwards, Aberystwyth University.

We look forward to welcoming the Eisteddfod to Aberystwyth in 2025.
