10 things to do in your first week:

  1. The most important thing to do during freshers’ week is pay a visit to Freshers’ Fair!!
  2. This is where you’ll be able to see all of our clubs and societies. You’ll be able to ask the committee members questions about the kind of sessions they run, when their socials are, and overall get to know more about what they do. Freshers’ Fair is also where you can also get lots of free stuff like pizza or sushi!
  3. Try and attend a social of a club or society you’re thinking of joining. Going to socials is about connecting with people you share a hobby, so it’s a great way to meet people! Don’t forget to look after yourself on a night out, though.
  4. Go for a wander in town. Aberystwyth is a very cute place, with lots of cafes and shops. Go visit the castle ruins, check out the beach, get to know Aber!
  5. Go for a swim in the sea! The temperature of the water is usually alright at the end of the summer, so make the most of it before the winter!
  6. If you forgot to pack some things, go to the Undeb’s BIG SALE. This is where you’ll be able to find some kitchen things like plates and pots and pans for free! If you’ve missed it, you can also find lots of things in charity shops in town.
  7. Go for walks!! Nature around Aber is outstanding, we’re so lucky to be able to live in such an environment. You’ve got plenty of opportunities: walk along the prom, go to Tan Y Bwlch Beach, go up Constitution Hill, go up Pen Dinas, have a wander in Penglais Woods, … You can even walk from Constitution Hill to Borth, it’s a 6 mile section of the Welsh Coastal Path and it’s stunning! You can get on a train back to Aberystwyth from Borth train station.
  8. Get a coffee in the Arts Centre. It’s a lovely place which can become a classic study spot!
  9. Watch a sunset from the viewpoint in Penglais Woods. The views over town and the sea are incredible, and the memories of watching sunsets there will last a lifetime.
  10. Attend your department’s events. This will be the best way for you to meet people from your course you will be spending the rest of your degree with! Departments usually try and organise something fun where students get to bond, and you should make the most of it.
  11. Go around shops to find some nice decorations for your room so your university environment is cute and cosy!
