We are proud of our big wins for students. Here’s just a few of what we achieved:
First Union to sign the Time to Change Wales Pledge
AberSU was the first Students’ Union to sign the Time to Change Wales Pledge, which commits us to put an action plan together to eliminate stigma and discrimination around mental health. You can find out more here.
Raising Funds for Nightline
In Freshers your Union held a massive ‘Big Sale’, selling donations of household items to new students as they arrived in Aberystwyth. The profit of £665 was donated to Nightline, the student-led confidential listen service.
More Room for Activities
We held a massive Freshers’ Fair on campus to promote sports clubs and societies. Over 5000 of you attended, which has led to over 1/3 of the student body being actively engaged in a sports club or society.
For Freshers, we recruited and trained over 200 students to act as Freshers’ Heroes – helping new students to arrive and settle in at Aberystwyth, and in turn, creating a massive first-impression on this year’s new intake.
Sports and Societies Online Membership
This semester, we’ve revamped Sports and Societies membership into a convenient, accessible online system through our website. This has simplified the process for clubs and societies to manage membership, whilst making it easier for students to sign up for activities.
Refurbishment of the Union
The Union building has been in much-need of a revamp, and this year, we’ve refurbished the back of the Main Room into the Picture House - a bookable space with state-of-the art projection facilities.
Launch of the Student Charter
Everyone at Aberystwyth University has roles and responsibilities, ranging from individual students, the Students’ Union and the University. The launch of a new, clear Student Charter outlined the expectations of all parties, and provides students with an overview of what they can expect from their Union and the University. The new Student Charter can be viewed here.
Housing Survey to Parliament
In 2012, AberSU launched a Housing Survey to collect data on experiences of students living in private sector accommodation. The results were commended in the Houses of Parliament and by the Welsh Assembly Government. AberSU has since sent a petition to the Welsh Assembly, asking them to look further into the issues raised. A full consultation will now be held.
Heroes of the Night
For Welcome Week, we launched Heroes of the Night, a scheme involving current students and the policy, working on the streets at night to ensure students kept hydrated with water, whilst helping to ensure they could find transport to arrive home safely.
Mind Café Sessions
As part of our drive to expand services to students, AberSU set up Mind Café Sessions, run by a Mental Health Advisor, to give students an independent place to discuss any concerns and share any stresses they are having.
Through the free condom C-card scheme, AberSU have handed out over 1000 free condom to students over the last academic year.
International Buddies Programme
In order to assist new international and Erasmus students joining the University, AberSU facilitated a programme of ‘International Buddies; who ran a host of welcome activities, carried out tours and ensured that everyone felt welcome and settled in Aberystwyth.
