AberSU is proud to present the final award evening of the week: AberSU Celebrates Sports Awards 2021.

These awards recognise the dedication of students to their Sports Club, recognising contributions socially, competitively and professionally.

This year we received 296 nominations & the shortlisting panel met virtually to read through the nominations and make some tough decisions.

We would like to congratulate everyone that was nominated as well as those winning the categories this evening.

Congratulations to all.

This club has gone above and beyond to ensure all members have a great experience despite the pandemic. Despite problems with internet connections and time delay, they have managed to hold the majority of their classes, choreograph and teach 8 different dances using Teams calls. They have held virtual socials every week, from movie nights to challenges and all with costume themes; building a sense of community between members, despite only having seen each other in person a small number of times. The club has adapted to the covid guidelines; meeting / rehearsing online when necessary and also adapting in person activities when possible to do so in a covid safe manner.

Congratulations Showdance!

  1. Showdance
  2. Aerial fitness
  3. Fencing

This person is dedicated to the club; also looks to help others improve their ability & fitness levels, helping them to gain confidence in themselves. He is President, Captain, Coach, Cheerleader and a big personality in the club that everyone can go to for help. Whether it is helping other committee members with their roles or helping fix someone's bowling, he's always there for a chat and a laugh. He strives to represent both the club and the university in the best possible light, with professionalism and sportsmanship in BUCS games. He is always supporting and encouraging everyone else, and doesn't always get the full recognition he deserves.

Congratulations Rhys Sewell, Cricket.

  1. Rhys Sewell (Cricket)
  2. Aggie Johnstone (Showdance)
  3. Joseph Davies (Swimming & Waterpolo)

This person has managed to keep all of the club’s members engaged online since September. Her commitment to the club is astounding, with every social being something new and interesting - which is hard to do online - but she manages to pull it off. She has put so much effort into making everyone at the club feel welcome and according to members, this has enabled the club to keep its ‘family’ atmosphere despite mainly meeting virtually this year!

Congratulations Jasmine Wall, Showdance!

  1. Jasmine Wall (Showdance)
  2. Nicola Hall (Women's Hockey)
  3. Miles Dolman (Swimming & Waterpolo)

Throughout the first lockdown this club raised over £400 for their chosen charity through travelling the distance to Benidorm with the help of another club. The club has also teamed up with Mind Aberystwyth to provide mental health services to their members, committee members have taken part in Mental Health Awareness training, and with the money raised from their 100 club they were able to buy essential items for the Food Bank in order to help those most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Congratulations Women’s Hockey!

  1. Women's Hockey
  2. Cricket
  3. Netball

This person has been a dedicated member of the club since her first year, took on the role of treasurer during her second year and president this academic year. She has always gone the extra mile in her respective positions, ensuring events and club life run smoothly. Being the only current committee member who was on committee before the pandemic, meant she had a wealth of knowledge to share with the new committee members but it also increased her responsibilities. Her club describes her as the unsung hero, who makes sure that everything is running smoothly and that all members are gaining that opportunity to have fun and dance.

  1. Megan Pagett (Showdance)
  2. Kayleigh Jones (Women's Hockey)
  3. James Young (Tennis)

This club is deserving of the Welsh Language Award as they recognise the importance of being a bilingual club. It’s clear that they take pride in being a bilingual club as all posts and advertisement is in both languages that will accommodate all!

  1. Netball
  2. Showdance

This person has been recognised for this award before; he is a standout performer in the men's football team and works tirelessly training for both the university and Aberystwyth town FC. He is a great example to others in training and a leader AUFC are lucky to have in their ranks. With exemplary commitment and ability to both fitness and football, he reflects the qualities desired for this award faultlessly.

Congratulations Mathew Jones!

This club has seen a vast increase in the number of members in comparison to last year, a rise of over 150%, with membership participation increasing drastically. This inclusive club is committed to providing plenty of opportunities to participate in a range of activities, from weekly socials to track-based sessions each week, and these sessions are catered for all abilities. During the pandemic the club hosted socially distanced training sessions, as well as a number of virtual events, competing against Bangor; including a 12 hour virtual relay, virtual 200 metre & 400 races and a virtual 5k race.
