Name & Role

Alice, Llywydd Wellbeing and Liberation

Short introduction…

I’m an international student from France. I have been in Aber for four years, I did my undergraduate and MA in English and Creative Writing before becoming a sabbatical officer.

Tell us an interesting or random fact about yourself...

My housemates say I’m three apples tall because I’m 5’2 and they joke about it a lot.

Choose three words that best describe you.

Passionate, foodie, French

It’s your last meal on earth…what’s on the menu? & which 3 celebrity would you invite for food?

I would invite Yoa (a French singer), Ali Smith, and Kristen Stewart.

I would have vegan ramen.

What are your hobbies or interests?

I play badminton in BUCS, I love music and have been playing the flute for almost twenty years. I read and write a lot as well.

My favourite wellbeing activity is to go on a walk or a hike.

Why did you choose to stand for this role?

The main reasons are because I am passionate about advocating for students’ health and because I wanted to give back to the community that welcomed me when I moved here and made my experience of university so memorable.

What are you most looking forward to this year?

Overall working towards bettering students’ experience of university and advocate for their wellbeing. I’m looking forward to leading liberation campaigns as well.

What are some of the causes you care about?

I care deeply about mental health and issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

I am passionate about intersectional feminism. Since moving to Wales I have fallen in love with the country and love all things Cymraeg.

What is your favourite Aberystwyth hangout?

I love a bonfire and BBQ on South Beach, I enjoy a good pint in Bottle & Barrel.

If you could be an animal what would you be and why?

I would be a sloth.

Do you have any out there traditions or strange superstitions?

When I’m having a drink with some friends, I have this French tradition that requires looking at people in the eyes, it’s considered bad luck if you don’t.

What’s your unpopular opinion?

I think AI should not exist.

What one thing do you think everyone should do/try at least once in their lifetime? (give a personal example if you want)

Journaling, it’s really helpful to process feelings and understand your emotions.

You are on your way to work on a Monday morning…what song comes on as your soundtrack?

The Adults Are Talking by The Strokes, it’s probably my favourite song ever and the vibes are immaculate.

Name a favourite place you have visited and why.

I went to Brazil and trekked through the Lencois Maranhenses National Park, made of sand dune and crystal-clear lagoons you can swim in. That trek was the best experience of my life.

RESULTS/CLEARING:

Why choose Aber?

Aber is such a special place where you get to do things you wouldn’t be able to anywhere else, like going for a 3AM dip in the sea after a night out because the club is on the beach.

FRESHERS:

How to make friends during Freshers?

Attend the Undeb’s meet and greets, go to clubs’ and societies’ first socials. It can be daunting at first but it’s worth it.

What are your top tips for any new students starting at Aberystwyth in September?

Starting university is an upheaval, and although it can be incredibly fun, it can also be quite daunting. Don’t hesitate to reach out to the Undeb’s Student advisor Molly by filling the form through this link: Contact An Advisor

What is your favourite Freshers memory?

When I went out my first night here to Freshers Icebreaker party and met Laura. Four years later, we’re still friends and we now work together as sabbatical officers!

HOUSING:

What are your top tips for housing/moving in with friends in Aber?

Be prepared to make compromises, sharing a house with friends can be an amazing experience if you all accept each other’s quirks.

EXAMS:

What are your top tips for coping with exam stress?

Going on a walk always helps me clear my mind. Allocating a dedicated time for exercise is key to staying sane in the craze of exams.

ELECTIONS:

What are your top tip for standing in a Students’ Union election?

Elections is a rollercoaster; make sure you get plenty of sleep during the campaign period and election week. Try and get any assignment due during that time early so you don’t burn yourself out.

You need to talk to as many people as possible.

COST OF LIVING:

Do you have any money saving tips that helped you out as a student?

Batch cook as much as you can to avoid spending too much money on food getting take aways.

Favourite ‘cheap’ meal to cook?

A lentil dahl. You get canned tomato and coconut milk for cheap, and you get 5 servings out of it at least!

ABER:

Where is your favourite place for food and café in Aber?

I love studying in Medina whenever I need a change from the library. Otherwise, I love the cakes and coffee at Y Gornel.

How would you spend your ideal day in Aber?

I would get breakfast at Y Gornel, go on a wander around town and do some charity shopping. Then I would get a takeaway sandwich from Ultracomida and eat it on the beach.

What is your favourite thing to do in Aber?

In the summer, I love going for a swim and then have a bonfire and BBQ on the beach.
