MEET THE SU TEAM

Over the Summer, it’s time for us as a Students’ Union to reflect on the year that’s just been, prepare to welcome new and current students to Aber in September and put plans in place for a full events and activity programme for 2020-2021.

The summer months are also a time to welcome and train new officer teams in readiness for the year ahead. Supporting the officer team are a family of SU staff working behind the scenes to ensure Aberystwyth students have the opportunity to love student life and be ready for anything.

We would love to take the opportunity over the next few months to introduce our AberSU family – who are all here for you if you need help, advice or a chat.

Spotlight on Emily Stratton – Sports Coordinator

Where is home?

Aberystwyth, but my hometown is Warwick, best known for its castle.

Tell us a little bit about yourself:

I am happiest when I am outdoors and playing sport. I love dogs and I love pudding. I love a dance party and have some crazy moves. I’m super competitive; it doesn’t matter if it’s a European Final or a card game with my family, I’m in it to win it.  I grew up competing in Athletics, but more recently have played Ultimate Frisbee for Great Britain and have taken up Mountain Biking. Travelling is one of my favourite things; I love exploring new places, and meeting new people, it doesn’t have to be thousands of miles away, there are some so many cool places to find in and around Aberystwyth.

It’s your last meal on earth…what’s on the menu?

Probably pasta for main, but my main focus will be on pudding, eton mess, crème brulee, apple crumble and custard, all washed down with lots of gin.

Outside of work, what are your favourite pastimes or hobbies?

Climbing mountains, skimming stones, mountain biking, playing frisbee and cooking yummy food.

What do you love about working in Aberystwyth?

I love working here because I get to be by the mountains and the sea, and the team I work with are awesome! Aberystwyth provides such a cool setting to play sport in; the weather despite being challenging, means that our students often train in the toughest conditions, so are ready for any playing conditions thrown at them against their competitors. Every cloud…

If you weren’t in your SU role…what would you be?

Before starting my job at Aber SU I was an Expedition Leader, travelling the world, and completing project work in a variety of diverse and wonderful communities. If I hadn’t had found a job in Aberystwyth which combined my love for sport and the outdoors, I think I would still be travelling.

What part(s) of your job do you enjoy the most?

Superteams made my year! I live for the events we run as an SU, and love seeing the enjoyment students get from them. Planning them is hard work, but the events are definitely one of the most enjoyable parts. This year we unfortunately missed out on Varsity, Celebrates and Rugby 7’s. I can’t wait to host Varsity in Aber next year, celebrate all the hard work of our clubs and societies and host our infamous 7’s tournament in May!
