What do we do?

We have our main training session every Saturday at 14:15-16:00 in the Sports centre dance hall. We also hold weekly socials which alternate between sober and drinking socials, so be sure to check our instagram for details!

Events & Competitions

We take part in, and host, several competitions as a club to give our team a chance to test themselves against other fencers from across Wales and England. These include our own personally run competition, Triangular, which brings together the university club, town club and a team of the uni club's alumni! See below for more details about our upcoming events:

Triangular

Triangluar is our own club run competition in which club members of all experiences and disciplines get the opportunity to compete against both town club members and uni club alumni in varying competition structures. We always encourage our new fencers to give Triangular a try so that they may gain some competitive experience and get the opportunity to gain invaluable fencing knowledge from the older fencers! This competition often takes place around late November or early December.

Osgood

Osgood is a charity saber competition which, along with our iconic pink socks, commemorates the club's former member Stefan Osgood. Any money received from osgood is donated to charity and purchases of the pink 'Stefan Socks' make a donation to Time to change wales. This competition usually takes place in mid-late March. More info about Stefan Osgood and his story can be found here.

Varsity

Varisity is an inter-university competition run between ourselves and the University of Bangor fencing club in which we assemble a men's team and women's team of our most confident fencers from each discipline and send them to compete against Bangor's best. The location of Varsity switches between being hosted in Aberystwyth and Bangor each year, so you'll get to experience fencing in both places if you stick around! Varsity also takes place around mid-late March. Check out Bangor's Club Instagram here!

Equipment

Our extensive armoury can provide the necessary kit to any member who does not have their own, but we will still ask you to ensure you bring the following to any fencing session:

  • Water bottle
  • Suitable footware for indoor sports (like trainers, NOT outdoor boots or platformed shoes)
  • T-Shirt (or any top clothing item that covers at least your torso, trust me you don't want to be hit with a fencing blade on unprotected skin)
  • Suitable full-legged bottoms (Something mobile for sports, but nothing that exposes skin like shorts or a skirt for the same reason as above)

We endeavor to provide our members with kit, however should you wish to buy your own you will require:

  • Breeches  |  Mandatory bottoms for competitions
  • Chest protectors  |  Highly recommended for those with breasts
  • Plastron  |  Mandatory shoulder protections
  • Jacket  |  Mandatory body protection
  • Lamé  |   Mandatory for foil and sabre  |  With arms for sabre, without arms for foil  |  Recommended that you only buy once you're sure on your preferred discipline
  • A Glove for your dominant hand  |  Mandatory hand protection  |  Metallic cuffs are required for sabre, can be bought separately or are already attached to sabre gloves
  • A blade  |  Mandatory for the discipline of your choice  |  We recommend two-pin for foils and sabres  |  Recommended that you only buy once you're sure on your preferred discipline
  • A mask  |  Mandatory head protection for the discipline of your choice  |  Sabre masks are fully conductive with a metallic beard, Foil masks are not conductive (mesh is often black) except for a metallic beard, Epee masks are not conductive anywhere  |  Recommended that you only buy once you're sure on your preferred discipline
  • Body wires  |  Mandatory for the discipline of your choice  |  Sabre and foil wires will be bayonet or two-pin depending on your blade's socket and will have a clip for your lamé, epee wires will be three-pin on both ends with no clip  |  Recommended that you only buy once you're sure on your preferred discipline
  • Mask wires  |  Mandatory for sabre masks, often for foil mask beards too  |  Recommended that you only buy once you're sure on your preferred discipline
