Professional Behaviour & Relationships

Contact

At AberSU, we strive to achieve the best experience for our students. We must each take personal responsibility for our own behaviour and role model the staff values/principles at all times.

Staff and students interact at many different levels and in different ways with the Union. These relationships are not always easy to handle nor do they necessarily have clear boundaries.  This policy aims to provide some parameters for the relationship staff and students have with each other.

The employer/employee relationship

Discussions about staff employment will take place through the line manager structure which feeds to the Trustee Board through the Chief Executive Officer.

Elected student Officer Trustees are trained to maintain confidentiality around staffing matters discussed in Trustee Board meetings (as are any staff present). If staff attempt to ask Officers for information about these matters, they will not respond, except to refer staff to their line manager.

Staff should expect that they would be treated fairly in their employment. The Union strives to ensure consistency and equality across the board. This does not mean that all staff will be treated the same, but that common approaches and principles will be applied.

Colleague relationships

Everyone at work develops friendships and our relationships with colleagues are really important in developing a positive organizational culture.  All staff are asked to familiarize themselves and to behave in a way that demonstrates our staff values/principles

Additional employment

You must inform your Line Manager if you have work commitments in addition to those with the Students’ Union.  If you decide to take a second job, you should bear in mind that:

  • You must get your managers agreement before starting the job and give details of the hours that you will work
  • We will not give agreement if the second job results in a conflict of interest

Starting a second job without agreement may result in a breach of contract.

Recruitment and selection

We make sure that all job advertisements appear internally[OP1]  and externally unless approved otherwise.  There are standard procedures for this.

Managers will always check that their actions comply with equal opportunities, good practice and legal obligations.

More advice on recruitment and selection is detailed in the Equal Opportunities Policy.

Leaving the students’ union

If you decide to leave, you need to give us notice in writing.  You should give your letter of resignation to your line manager.

Notice periods

The amount of notice you will need to give will be stated within your contract of employment.

Dress code

Students’ Union staff perform a variety of roles that vary throughout the working year. While there is no staff Uniform all staff are required to wear clothing appropriate for a smart/casual office environment. All staff will be given a Lanyard and staff identification badge which should be worn when working.

Staff may also be required to wear promotional clothing (i.e. t-shirts, hoodies, caps etc.) linked to promotional events.

If Uniform and/or protective clothing is necessary it will be provided free of charge by the Union, and must be worn at all times when on duty.  If you have any special requirements relating to uniform, please speak to your line manager.
