Aiming to reduce food waste on-campus, the Community Fridge project works with various Hospitality outlets to collect surplus food from them which is then made available to any users of the Fridge.

The Community Fridge is an on-campus project which provides food for those in need through collecting surplus food from various local donors.

The Community Fridge’s main purpose is to assist students during the current cost of living by providing free access to food. The fridge operates on a system of good faith with stock available to anybody. There are no limits to what items can be taken and what quantities the items are taken in. Please be respectul when using the fridge. Please refer to the Food Standards Agency guidelines if you wish to donate your own food.

Community Fridge’s are of great importance on a multitude of levels. Globally, the United Nations have outlined the need to eliminate hunger, the importance of sustainable communities and the responsibility to efficiently consume and produce items products within their Sustainable Development Goals. The Welsh government has mirrored these values in its own policy, with the ‘Food Matters’ Initiative aiming to encourage a sustainable relationship with food. The community fridge once again aims to impose these values on a local scale in Aberystwyth.

Our Accomplishments

Last year our project managed to prevent the waste of:

  • Over 25 Kg of Onions
  • Over 100 cans of food
  • Over 35 bags of grains
  • Over 50 seasoning jars/packets

If you would like to help make a change and assist in the running of the community fridge you may do so here
