We’re delighted to welcome a new member of the team to AberSU this week – everyone meet Tom!
Tom joined us this week as the new Societies Development Coordinator and we stole him from his induction to ask a few questions and get know him a little bit better.
About Tom:
Tom is a recent graduate of Bangor university where he studied his for undergraduate with integrated masters in Geography. A keen gardener, he spends most of his time enjoying the outdoors although can’t stand berries or cats. He’s also partial to a vegan treat whilst watching Netflix to avoid pesky TV ads.
Tom, why did you join the team here at AberSU?
As I approached the end of my degree and started looking for work, I made sure to include Aber in my search. Although I studied at Bangor, I grew up visiting Aber a lot and wanted to give it a go! I was so impressed with the variety of societies at the Union and hoped I had the right skills and passion for helping them succeed – and here we are!
Have you had much involvement with Student Societies before?
Yes – I joined a couple of societies in my time at uni and held a couple of committee positions. As the Chairperson for Students for Treborth Action Group (STAG), I helped coordinate the conservation and maintenance of Treborth Botanical Gardens as well as delivering education through workshops, tours and the odd trip. I was also the Treasurer for GardenSoc where we helped students improve their green thumb.
What are you hoping to get up to your first few months?
Although it’s a bit quiet over Summer, I’m most looking forward to getting to know the Officers, Society Committees and meeting some Aber students! I’m hoping to learn a lot and see how things work here, most importantly through listening to student feedback.
We have to ask – who will you be supporting at the next Varsity?
Ahh! Well I will be supporting Aber…maybe we will win this year!
Anything else to add?
Come and say hi or pop me an email if you need anything – I’m really looking forward to working with you all!
You can find Tom in the Opportunities Office in the SU or reach him through thm35@aber.ac.uk. Good luck from everyone!
