SU policy is now a reality

We are very pleased to confirm that one of our SU Council Policies is now a reality!

A policy was passed at SU council that people who transition after university or decide to change their name after graduation should be able to get a new degree certificate and there should be a process for this.

See policy here.

This year’s SU President, Lauren Marks and SU Welfare Officer, Naomi Cutler raised the policy at a Student Support Committee (SSC) during a discussion regarding a Trans Equality policy. It was agreed that this should be an action for the committee and resulted in this policy now becoming a reality.

In the final SSC of the year it was announced that the Academic Quality and Records Office (AQRO) would reissue degree certificates if the original certificate is returned and the student provides proof of their name change. A formal process for this is currently being developed.

If a student wishes to change their name on an existing certificate, the current procedure is to use the contact details below.

SU President, Lauren Marks is thrilled with this win:

"I am pleased to see the university making strong commitments to our Trans students and graduates. SU Officers this year acted on important SU Council policy that makes Aberystwyth a more inclusive and supportive university, and we are glad that the university acted upon our suggestions so quickly. Our Trans graduates especially can now feel more supported by Aberystwyth University and we have helped them in this journey. If anyone has any queries about the process please contact me on union.president@aber.ac.uk"
