Varsity

On the 25th of March the Sports and Societies Varsity competition between Aberystwyth and Bangor came back to Aber after 2 years away.

The tournament saw hundreds of students from over 30 sports teams and societies compete for the Aber vs Bangor Varsity trophy in 40 sports competitions & 4 society competitions over the weekend.

Aberystwyth kept the Societies Varsity trophy once again... well done to all teams that competed but a special congratulations must go to the Societies competing in the Societies Varsity on winning the trophy.

RAG

AberSU is very proud of the fanatical support our student groups show for Raising and Giving (RAG).

Although clubs and societies can chose to support a charity close to their hearts, they can also support the AberSU “union charities of the year” voted on by the students, which were:

MIND Aberystwyth (Local)

Wales Air Ambulance (Wales)

Teenage Cancer Trust (UK)

You, our clubs & societies, were especially busy during November (RAG month) hosting numerous RAG events and fundraisers and have raised over £20,000 for local and national charities.

Spotlight on societies:

Tickled Pink society currently raised the most in the UK for their chosen charities and this amount continues to rise. They raised £4,634.33 in their first semester alone, and hosted a Glitter Party locally which raised £1,700 just for that one event. They promote breast cancer awareness and give a lot of time to informing students about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and where to seek support.

Unicef have raised £1,197.72 with charitable activity and events.

English and Creative Writing Society have raised over £1,000 so far with poetry slams, open mic events and hosting authors to give readings and talks to students.

Aberystwyth Community Of Gamers (ACOG) hosted 24 and 48hr game-a-thons this year, which fundraise for the charity Special Effect. They dedicate a sleepless period of time to playing online games, hosting gaming tournaments for all to enter and live streaming their events. They have raised over £2,000 so far with events still to be hosted.
