The President is the lead officer for all things democracy, governance and community ensuring that the student voice is at the heart of everything we do. Working with Officers, University leaders and the community beyond Aberystwyth, the President aims to make real lasting change to your union, your university and your world.

In a nutshell, here’s what the President is asked to do:

♦Serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees.

♦Ensure the Officer team regularly reviews key student issues and representational and political affairs in line with current membership

♦Ensure all students are represented and not excluded from the AUSU

♦Develop and Assess the AUSU Strategic Plan in conjunction with the Chief Executive

♦Work with Head of Departments and Services to achieve strategic aims and outcomes

♦Ensure AUSU Members are represented on a national scale by coordinating dealings with NUS Wales

♦Positively promote the work and objectives of AUSU by acting as the figurehead in dealings with the public

♦Attend appropriate University Committees.♦

Whether it’s discovering your passion, playing the game or fundraising for a charity close to your heart, every day is different if you're the Activities Officer. Working with sports, societies, and other activity groups the Activities Officer campaigns and lobbies to ensure you have the resources and support to develop your skills. More importantly, there’s more to life than just lectures and coursework and the Activities Officer exists to ensure you have those opportunities.

In a nutshell, here’s what the Activities Officer is asked to do:

♦Attend regular meetings with the University Sports Centre to further the development of sport and sporting facilities

♦Attend regular meetings with the Sports Executive and Society Executive

♦Promote participation in sports through annual events such as Sports Week, Super Teams, Varsity and Rugby 7s

♦Meet at least twice a year with all committee members from Sports Clubs and Societies

♦Ensure financial sustainability of affiliated clubs and societies (Allocation of grant money by the end of October of each academic year; only sign off payment requests if it deemed suitable by the Activities Officer and there is proof of spending; mandate training provided by SU to two members of all committees). ♦

The Education Officer is primarily focussed on ensuring that each student at Aberystwyth is getting the degree they deserve. Working with Academic Reps, other Officers and key University leaders, the Education Officer aims at enhancing and improving the educational experience at Aberystwyth from the lecture theatre to the day you graduate. They’re here to make sure it’s done right.

♦Represent the student body on matters relating to education and the student experience, including international and postgraduate students, and widening participation.

♦Inform policy within the University and Students’ Union on matters relating to education and the student experience.

• Ensure that procedures of Union Council Meetings and Annual General Meetings are well understood by AUSU members.
• Ensure that AUSU rules and standards of behaviour are adhered to at Union Council Meetings and Annual General Meetings.
• Ensure efficient and effective communication takes place between Officer Trustees and the Democracy Team

♦Represent the interests of Welsh Speakers to AUSU

♦Arrange and Chair the Bilingualism Steering group, supported by the Welsh Affairs and UMCA President,  and responding to any issues that are raised by this group

♦Acting as a source of information and a point of contact for students on matters of the Welsh Language.

♦Liaising with student-led groups who have an interest in the development of the Welsh Language

♦Working with UMCA and provide relevant campaigns on the Welsh Language, and issues that affect Welsh speaking students.

♦Formulating AUSU policy on matters of interest of concern welsh language speakers.♦

The Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Officer represents the interests of Black and Minority Ethnic students. Working with other officers they will campaign on issues relevant to BME students and ensure the interests of our BME members are always heard. In a nutshell, here’s what the BME Officer is asked to do:

• Organising and leading campaigns for BME.
• Representing BME students on matters relevant to them, including by sitting on the Equality and Diversity Steering Group.
• Providing relevant campaigns and materials to BME members of AUSU.
• Working with relevant societies, interest groups, and Officers across Wales and the UK to further the aims of the BME Students Campaign.

♦Represent Disabled Students on matters relevant to them, including by sitting on the Equality and Diversity Steering Group.

The LGBT+ Officer represents the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community on campus. Working closely with Union officers, students and interest groups, the LGBT+ Officer’s role is to protect and extend equality for all students who self-define as LGBT+.

In a nutshell, here’s what the LGBT+ Officer is asked to do:

♦Organise and lead campaigns for self-identifying LGBT+ students.

♦Represent  LGBT+ students  on  matters  relevant  to  them,  including  by  sitting  on the Equality and Diversity Steering Group

♦Provide relevant campaigns and materials to LGBT+ members of AUSU.

♦Work with relevant societies, interest groups, and Officers across Wales and the UK to further the aims of the LGBT+ Campaign. ♦

This role is voluntary and the successful candidate will carry out the role alongside their studies. All elected officers will be provided with training, support and guidance to carry out their role and make their objectives a reality.

The Women’s’ Officer represents women students on campus and campaigns to ensure gender equality in our Union, the University and our community. Working with the Officer Team, you’ll campaign to ensure the needs of women members are taken into account in everything we do. In a nutshell, here’s what the Women’s Officer is asked to do:

• Organising and leading campaigns for self-identifying Women students.
• Representing Women students on matters relevant to them, including by sitting on the Equality and Diversity Steering Group.
• Providing relevant campaigns and materials to Women members of AberSU.
• Working with relevant societies, interest groups, and Officers across Wales and the UK to further the aims of the Women’s Campaign.

This role is voluntary and the successful candidate will carry out the role alongside their studies. All elected officers will be provided with training, support and guidance to carry out their role and make their objectives a reality.|

Mae Swyddog y Menywod yn cynrychioli myfyrwragedd ar y campws ac yn ymgyrchu i sicrhau cydraddoldeb rhyweddol yn ein Hundeb, y Brifysgol a'n cymuned. Representing the views of the international student community, the International Students’ Officer works to enhance their welfare and experience. The International Students’ Officer works with other officers to campaign on issues relevant to international students. In a nutshell, here’s what the International Students’ Officer is asked to do:

• Organise and lead campaigns for International students.
• Represent International students on matters relevant to them.
• Provide relevant campaigns and materials to International members of AUSU.
• Work with relevant societies, interest groups, and Officers across Wales and the UK to further the aims of the International Students Section.

This role is voluntary and the successful candidate will carry out the role alongside their studies. All elected officers will be provided with training, support and guidance to carry out their role and make their objectives a reality.|

The Mature Students’ Officer is responsible for representing the views and interests of mature students within the Union and the University, encouraging participation of mature students in the Union and advancing the welfare of such students.

In a nutshell, here’s what the Mature Students’ Officer is asked to do:

♦Organising and leading campaigns for Mature Students.

♦Representing Mature Students on matters relevant to them, and working with the Mature Students Zone.

♦Providing relevant campaigns and materials to mature student members of AUSU.

♦Working with relevant societies, interest groups, and Officers across Wales and the UK to further the aims of the Mature Students Zone.♦

This role is voluntary and the successful candidate will carry out the role alongside their studies. All elected officers will be provided with training, support and guidance to carry out their role and make their objectives a reality.

As Postgraduate Officer you’ll work with other officers, University staff and postgraduate students to ensure the postgraduate community is heard across campus. Running campaigns, the Postgraduate Officer ensures postgraduate students are getting the best deal from Aber.|Fel Swyddog yr Ôl-raddedigion, byddwch chi'n gweithio gyda swyddogion eraill, staff y Brifysgol a myfyrwyr ôl-raddedig i sicrhau bod cymuned yr ôl-raddedigion yn cael ei chlywed ledled y campws. Drwy gynnal ymgyrchoedd, mae Swyddog yr Ôl-raddedigion yn sicrhau bod gan fyfyrwyr ôl-raddedig y cynnig gorau oddi wrth Aber. 

Mae Undeb Cenedlaethol y Myfyrwyr (UCM) yn cynnal cynhadledd genedlaethol bob blwyddyn. Mae'r gynhadledd hon yn gosod polisïau ar gyfer y flwyddyn sydd i ddod ac yn ethol Llywydd, Dirprwy Lywydd a chynrychiolwyr eraill. Hefyd, caiff y gyllideb ar gyfer y flwyddyn i ddod ei phenderfynu drwy'r Cyfarfod Cyffredinol Blynyddol (CCB). Mae gan UMAber gyfle i anfon cynrychiolwyr i'r gynhadledd hon lle gallant leisio eu barn, cymryd rhan mewn trafodaethau a phleidleisio yn yr etholiadau ac yn y CCB.

The National Union of Students (NUS) holds a national conference every year. This conference sets policy for the year ahead and elects the President, Vice President and other representatives. It is also where the budget for the year ahead is decided through the Annual General Meeting (AGM). AberSU has the opportunity to send delegates to this conference where they can voice their opinions, partake in debates, and vote in the elections and AGM.

This year the conference is taking place in Brighton, 19 April – 21 April 2016.

AberSU can send four delegates to National Conference:

♦4 additional places are for students (or Student Officers) elected on a cross campus ballot

NUS operates a gender balance regulation which means any delegation we send, two delegates must be women.

All expenses are covered for you including travel, accommodation and registration. We’ll be sure to share the specifics with the successful candidates closer to the time.

Attending the NUS Wales Conference as a delegate allows you to ensure the decisions being made will benefit Aberystwyth’s students. You have the opportunity to choose the leaders of the student movement in Wales and ensure Aberystwyth has its voice heard.

This year the conference will be held on the 9th & 10th March 2016. The Venue still needs to be confirmed but once it has we’ll be sure to let you know.

AberSU can send five delegates to conference:

Main Responsibilities:

• Attend around six meetings of the Board per year;
• Prepare thoroughly for Board meetings, including reading all papers supplied beforehand;
• Take on additional roles on subcommittees of the Board as may be required;
• Attend the AberSU Annual General Meeting Act in accordance with the duties of a trustee as outlined by the Charities Commission (http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk)

More detail: The Student Trustee Board takes an active role in the governance of AberSU and is open to students to play an active role in. Whilst the Senior Management Team have responsibility for the direct operational control of AberSU, the role of the Trustee is to oversee the general strategic direction, financial stability and legal observance of the organisation, as well as carry out a number of specific statutory duties and responsibilities. This is not a political position and candidates should not stand for election on policies, but based on their skills, experience and ability to carry out the role. It is important that Trustees attend meetings with an open mind, not with a specific stance or opinion on items for discussion.|

As Undergraduate Trustee you will work with key members of staff and trustees to ensure the Undergraduate voice is part of all major decisions taken by the Union.  Along with the other trustees, you will be responsible for overseeing the Union’s Finances and Governance.

You will also be asked to take part in various Sub Committees on topics like Appointments, Financial Risk and Equality & Diversity. All Trustees are required to attend a minimum of 6 meetings a year to actively support achieving the Union’s objectives.

Serving as a Trustee is a great opportunity but there are few details you should know:

♦Only current Undergraduate students are allowed to stand and vote for the Undergraduate Trustee.

♦The successful candidate will assume office 1st November and shall remain a Trustee for 2 years unless they finish their studies before those 2 years are up.

♦You can only serve as a Student Trustee for a maximum of 2 terms and you have to be a student for as long as you are a Student Trustee.♦
