A Computer Science student at Aberystwyth University has achieved national recognition for his part-time student employment in the 2014 Student Employee of the Year awards.
A Computer Science student at Aberystwyth University has achieved national recognition for his part-time student employment in the 2014 Student Employee of the Year awards.
Scott Roe, who works as a Food & Beverage Supervisor at the Students’ Union, walked away with the national prize in the ‘Step up to Leadership’ category, having already won at regional and institutional level.
The Student Employee of the Year Awards, promoted through the University Careers Service, exist to reward the outstanding achievements and contributions from students who combine their study commitments with part-time work. The nominations were judged at institution level, before going on to a regional and national judging panel.
Scott was nominated by his line-manager, Sian Sherman, Food & Beverage Assistant Manager, for his leadership skills in taking responsibility for departmental projects, supervising other student-staff and showing creative thinking to driving forward new commercial outlets within the Union. This leadership has included the recruitment and training of new student staff. In addition, Scott project managed an innovative new digital system to facilitate online catering orders, delivering a massive boost to the catering output and making full utilisation of the technical skills developed through his degree.
Scott, who has been promoted to the role of Senior Food & Beverage Supervisor, was presented his award at the annual SEOTY Awards Dinner at Brunel University. Of his win, Scott said: “Winning at regional level was such a proud moment, and to now be recognised at national level is amazing. I’m very thankful for the opportunity to develop a range of skills throughout my part-time role, and I’m looking forward to developing these further over the next year”
Beverly Herring, Careers Adviser said: “In previous years, we have been very successful at regional level, this year is our first year as national winners, showing how as a University we recognise the potential to develop high level skills, such as leadership and early responsibility through on-campus activity”
John Glasby, CEO of the Students’ Union said: “This national award is further confirmation of Scott’s outstanding individual performance and the efforts made by the Students’ Union to give its student staff the development opportunities and support to progress into leadership roles. I am delighted for Scott;- you could not wish to meet a nicer, more modest character, and for his managers who put him forward for this recognition.”
