A society for both competitive souls and for those who just enjoy a good game of chess and great company. We compete at tournaments across the UK and hold an OTB session every Wednesday!

Welcome to the Aberystwyth University Chess Society! A society for both competitive souls, and for those who just enjoy a good game and great company! We welcome players of all abilities, including complete beginners! Whether you're a Grandmaster in the making, or just about know how the horses move, you’ll find your home with us!

Over the last few years, our growing society has had tremendous success over the board, becoming the 2018 BUCA Division 3 Chess Champions. Last year we continued our tournament success, reaching the finals of 20/20, narrowly missing out on 3rd in Division 3 of BUCA, and continuing our long-running Aberystwyth vs. Bangor Varsity win streak. In our first ever season in the local Dyfed chess league, we finished in an impressive 3rd place and won the Iolo Jones Trophy for the best performance for a team by players rated under 1700. In addition to this tremendous success, we raised over £400 for charity in our annual 24-hour online tournament, which is always a fun and light-hearted event. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to email one of us, or join our Facebook page for constant updates.

Normally, we meet on the 2nd floor of the Arts Centre on Wednesdays from 1pm - 6pm for our regular session.
We occasionally have socials on Thursdays but they are usually haphazardly scheduled.
We offer casual games, tutoring, training for upcoming tournaments as well as the occasional lecture about interesting games that have taken place.

Even if chess is in black and white, life is rarely so. The Aberystwyth University Chess Club is proud to have members from all walks of life, and is dedicated to the inclusion and acceptance of all members regardless of age, race, ethnicity, ability, culture or nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, religious affiliation, socioeconomic status and marital status.
