The NSS and me

The National Student Survey is an annual survey of final year undergraduates in the UK, it asks many questions about your time and experiences while at university. It asks questions on a range of topics including the teaching you receive, the assessments and feedback you get and how you feel that your voice is listened to while at university. The NSS measures student satisfaction using the number of students with statements about their course, Ipsos MORI then compile the data and anonymise it for every university before releasing it publicly.

The NSS is one of the main ways that the university knows what you thought about your time at Aber was like, your responses will help the University and us at the Students’ Union know what we did well and where we can improve for current and future students. Not only does the NSS help the University to improve, it gives us evidence here at the Students’ Union as to what students think.

We have successfully used NSS data as part of our assessment and feedback campaign last year to implement the new 15 working-day turnaround policy for feedback and this year in recognition of the work being done around assessment and feedback we are introducing a new award at our annual teaching awards (but that’s for another blog).

The NSS is live to complete now at www.thestudentsurvey.com though it’ll be officially launched at the Refreshers Fayre in the Students’ Union on the 30th January. As an incentive to fill it in the University are running a competition for all students who fill it in before Monday 28th February will be entered into a prize draw to win an iPad Air 2 or a GoPro HERO4 Silver (I’m told the GoPro is very good).

This year’s NSS campaign will also see the return of the famous #AberQuack 6ft inflatable duck as well as it’s many smaller non-gendered cousins around campus. Keep an eye out on campus and Twitter!

So let us know whether we fit the bill and I’ll leave you with some duck based facts.

What we typically think of as a “duck” is actually a number of species in the Anatidae family of birds, they are related to swans and geese. The most commonly recognised species of duck is the Mallard or Wild duck, the male Mallard has a glossy green head, grey wings and belly, while the female has a brown-speckled plumage. Mallard ducks have a moulting season, they are vulnerable during this time as the moulting stops them flying. Finally, I have been reliably informed that a duck’s quack does echo.
