This year we are doing Officer Elections differently…

With a new year comes the usual run up to elections and with it chalking, banners, flyers, campaign videos and facebook group invites. Whether as a candidate or voter you should take time to consider being involved, and there is no better time than before the new term begins.

However this year we’ve made a few subtle changes replacing the manifesto style publicity of the past with focused questions in which all candidates will be asked. While Officers will still have the ability to shape priorities and put forward their own, we want to ensure that it is Union policy that is at the front of this work.

A key part of the role of being a Full-time or Volunteer Officer is to deliver upon Union policy which once passed by students is in place for three years or until achieved.

So this year in addition to questions for all candidates about what qualities they will bring to the role and how they will benefit the wider elected officer team, we’ll be asking Full-time Officer candidates how they would deliver on current priorities. So taking the Opportunities Officer role as an example…

Currently the Union has policy on extending gym hours on the weekends, ensuring the university invests in sport and freeing up Wednesday afternoons for sport among others. As Opportunities Officer how would you ensure these are achieved?

The idea being that students will when voting have an understanding of how candidates will prioritise and work towards existing policy as decided by students.

While there will be plenty of emphasis on the Full-time Officers who are paid to represent students next year, you can still be part of the change whilst studying by standing for one of our Volunteer Officer roles.
