New Societies for the 21/22 Academic Year!

Every year we have some fantastic new societies join us as part of the #TeamAber community. Some are completely brand new; others are reimagined versions of past groups. Each one has a passionate set of new committee members eager to welcome you and get you involved in the variety of things they have to offer. This year is no exception, let us introduce you to some of our new societies for the academic year ahead…

Aberystwyth University Liberals

Aberystwyth University Liberals help campaign for a fairer and brighter future for Wales and the United Kingdom! We hold regular socials, speakers events, debates, as well as canvassing around the county. All are welcome - and remember, membership is free! Our first social is our summer picnic on Thursday the 30th of September at 12:30 on campus (What3Words ///income.access.honestly). See you then!

CARPE DIEM

CARPE DIEM ('seize the day') society, inspired by the film 'Dead Poets Society', is a safe and accepting place to any and all Aberystwyth University students to express themselves through thematic poetry readings at the beach and castle ruins. Together we will share our love for our own or another poet's works under the beam of a flashlight or around a bonfire. As well as the outside meetings, we will encourage society members to participate in poetry writing workshops online..

Centre Aberystwyth

Centre Aberystwyth is a campaigning society that aims to research and raise awareness about issues that affect students across campus. They are a group of students for students, aiming to make both Aberystwyth and the University a better place. They run campaigns, research issues, lobby bodies, collaborate, organise events, and run socials. Get involved with as little or as much as you’d like; everyone is welcome to pursue their own interests.

Duke of Edinburgh Society (DofE Soc)

The DofE society aims to give students the opportunity and support structure to start and/or complete any DofE award. Whether you did bronze in school and wish you carried on to gold, need to complete a residential or expedition, or have no idea what a DofE award is and just want to come along to ask questions, you will be more than welcome. We are planning on running a couple of different expeditions depending on the needs of club members, as well as a residential for people looking to complete the gold award. We will also help with finding opportunities to complete the volunteering skills and physical aspects of the award. Every Tuesday evening there will be a brief meeting followed by a social, and at the end of the year we will hold a summer meal to celebrate everybody who has earned (or is well on their way to earning) an award.

Feminist Society

Aberystwyth University Feminist society welcome all students to join an organisation aiming to bring about awareness for the inequalities that women-presenting people face in their everyday lives. We are hoping to run several campaigns in the upcoming year surrounding safety on campus and period poverty, among plenty of other causes we hope to support. To us, feminism is simply about equality in every sense of the word; sex, identity and gender. Achieving this, even in a small way, is essential to student life and progression in the 21st century. This society aims to empower and help individuals embrace their identity, something one could definitely agree is needed in any setting, but especially when you branch out for the first time. Some of you will have heard us speak at the vigil in March and others may have seen our contribution to Mouthy Magazine, but we are determined to achieve more in other sectors to aid the long-fought battle for equality. We look forward to meeting any new members!

Motorcycle Society

The Motorcycle Society aims to encourage new riders to take up the hobby as well as build the confidence of existing riders. This will be achieved through several group activities such as ride-outs, maintenance workshops, and social events. Bi-monthly ride-outs will allow students to explore Ceredigion, whilst also improving their riding skills. A social event will be held every Tuesday, where anyone is welcome to come along. Activities will include, beach BBQ, film nights, and pub crawls.

Ornithological Society

AU Ornithological Society (Birdsoc) is for anyone who is interested in the natural world, specifically birds and bird watching. We welcome students of all abilities, from beginner to expert and from all courses (from zoology to history!).  We plan to run fun walks in and around Aberystwyth and Ceredigion, making the most of the wonderful nature spots we have on our doorstep (winter starling murmuration’s by the pier, Tan-y-Bwlch, South beach and North beach and Clarach bay). On longer days out we will spend time at Ynyslas and Borth beach and bog (good for a range of birds: coastal, waders, warblers and more), RSPB Ynys-hir (notably good for pied-flycatchers), the Dyfi Osprey Project (OSPREYS!), New Quay (good for auks in the summer months with the occasional puffin visitors) and more! Throughout the year we also hope to collaborate with Aberystwyth Conservation Volunteers to help at local reserves around Ceredigion. See you in September!

Pirate Society

The Pirate Society aims to bring all pirate enthusiasts together to participate in pirate-themed events. Such events include movie nights, pub outings, treasure hunts, and ship and museum visits. This is all achieved in a fun, safe, and judgement free environment where anyone can learn about and dress up as pirates. Pub outings will be held fortnightly on Saturdays and a movie night, treasure hunt, or museum visit will be held once a month. Everyone is invited to join!
