Congratulations on gaining your place at the University by the sea… we can’t wait to meet you!!

As we enter the new academic year, it can seem daunting moving to a new town or starting a new course. But don’t worry, everyone is going to be in the same boat. And there are so many opportunities to meet people and make friends, which will help you to find your place here in Aber!

As we all know Fresher’s is going to look a little different this year due to COVID-19. However, that does not mean that you won’t have the opportunity to meet like-minded people and mix with other students who have similar interests to you.

There is a whole range of events and opportunities being brought to you by the SU which should enable you to begin your journey whilst having a lot of fun!

There’s a Fresher’s Facebook page which you can join to connect with fellow Aberystwyth Freshers and current students! It will also keep you informed of what’s happening and how to get involved. You can ask to join the private group here.

There are also lots of introductory events being organised by our clubs and societies which are well worth checking out; why not visit our website. Joining a club or society is a great way to make new friends, and you may even discover something new that you love that you’ve never tried before! Here at Aber we have over 80 societies to choose from and over 50 sports clubs you can join; surely there’s something you’re interested in out of these? Why not have a look on our website to find out more.

Why not volunteer? At AberSU we offer The Aber Award, which is our way of recognising the commitment you put in to help a cause that’s important to you. And it can also be a great way to meet people. Check out more information and opportunities; visit the SU website.

Have you packed anything to help you make friends? Something fun to do with your new housemates. This could be anything you enjoy from a game of Twister to a pack of cards. Games can be a great icebreaker and a way of getting to know the people you’re living with in a light-hearted fun environment. Don’t worry if you haven’t packed anything – there are plenty of places in Aberystwyth to buy something like this.

Try spending time in communal spaces; why not offer to make someone a cup of tea? Who doesn’t like a cuppa? Or a panad as we say in Wales ??

And finally, just be yourself. Remember everyone is in the same situation, and you all want to make friends.
