It is all too easy to watch these elections go by and not engage with the extremely talented and brave individuals who have put their hat in the ring to lead your Students’ Union this year. But this article will hopefully tell you why you should not let these elections pass you by like the proverbial plastic bag in the wind.
There are two fundamental answers as to why you should vote in the elections. The first being rather long winded regarding the importance of exercising your right to vote because here in this country we pride ourselves on democracy and we shouldn’t take these things for granted. However not wanting to sound like a worn out broken record we shall skip over this answer.
More importantly you should vote for the simple reason that your Full-time Officer Team which consist of a Union Development Officer, Academic Affairs Officer, Wellbeing Officer, Welsh Culture Officer and Student Opportunities Officer GET THINGS DONE! They work 9-5 every day with students and for students and have made some incredible changes. See below our top 5!
- Lobbied for the 24 hour Hugh Owen library and extended opening hours of Thomas Parry library on Llanbadarn
- Exam de-stress campaign including Puppy room, tea and coffee delivery and message in a bauble
- Health Board survey which has opened the door for regular student forums and for the student voice to be heard locally on health issues
- Campaigned and secured commitment for the re-opening of Pantycelyn Halls
- Reduced library fines and new assessment and feedback policy introduced
Oh and did we forget to tell you that everyone that votes will receive printer credit and depending on what day you vote could lead you to winning either pair of summer ball tickets or a £25 amazon voucher, and if those are not worthy reasons to vote then we don’t know what is?
So next time you see someone trying to talk to you or asking your opinion on one of their policies take two minutes out of your day to talk to them, or at the very least simply go online and vote.
