Spotlight on Ellen Van Havenbergh

I play hockey and I ride horses. I started playing Hockey when I was 6 years old, Although the coach said I was the annoying little kid that never played and just stood next to her trying to chat. Since then I have played at various levels. Both Local and International. I started Horse riding at 6 years old as well. I have always done this recreationally.

First of all can you give us a bit more information about yourself? What degree do you study? What year of study are you in? and a fun fact about yourself (make sure it’s appropriate)?

I am a Belgian 20 year old in my second year studying Equine science.

What sports do you participate in and how did you initially get involved?

I play hockey and I ride horses. I started playing Hockey when I was 6 years old, Although the coach said I was the annoying little kid that never played and just stood next to her trying to chat. Since then I have played at various levels. Both Local and International. I started Horse riding at 6 years old as well. I have always done this recreationally.

What do you get out of being involved with sports teams in Aberystwyth?

Friends, plus it gives me something to do other than sleep and watch TV. Mainly it gives me a much needed break from my overly needy boyfriend. Also I love the sport, so it gives me a chance to play.

Has being part of a sports team given you an opportunity to gain achievements or qualifications? If so, what achievements / qualifications?

Yes, Umpire course, 4689 (coaching course). In horse riding it has also given me the chance to ride competitively.

What would you say to Aber students who wanted to join a sports club?

Just go for it, it makes university life much more enjoyable. You meet the friends that will be the biggest part of your Uni life. Plus if you like a sport or want to try new sports. There is no better time or place to get involved.

How much time do you dedicate each week to training?

A lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So much that my boyfriend is always grumpy about it. I am training pretty much every day for at least an hour. But that’s because I am a sports freak. Not all university sport requires this much commitment but I just enjoy it.

How have you managed to do this around your studies?

I think the real question is; How do you manage to study around your sports?

What processes have you had to go through to get selected for the National squad?

I played for Belgium under 18s. I went to trials for Welsh Uni for 10 minutes and then A&E for 3 hours. So I think I gave enough. I must have been bloody good in those 10 minutes.

What are your future aspirations for when you complete your degree?

Travel a lot.. then work.. then travel a lot more.. then travel even more. But of course play some hockey and I want to work with horses.
