As part of our ‘Ask the VC?’ consultation as well as asking for your views we’re also sharing those of our full-time officers so you know the conversations we’ll be having in the initial months of our new Vice-Chancellor. First up is your President, Lauren…

  1. Being at University is expensive for students, and it’s clear that in addition to their course fees they are having to pay lots of extra additional costs, or costs they didn’t know about before they started; for example, students pay to print, go on field courses, park on campus, participate in extracurricular activities, buy course materials and much more. I would love to see our new Vice Chancellor tackle some of these costs and reduce the burden on students.
  2. Before I came to Aberystwyth I didn’t know a word of Welsh, and didn’t understand Welsh culture at all. Aberystwyth has a strong Welsh heritage, but I think sometimes it leaves the Welsh language behind. Not all materials are bilingual, those learning throught the medium of Welsh can’t submit using TurnItIn, and our Welsh language hall of residence has been closed. I want to see a strong commitment from the new Vice Chancellor to Welsh language and culture, and also see her understand what Pantycelyn means to students and support its reopening.
  3. When I was a student, I joined the Badminton club, which gave me an amazing circle of friends and a great stress relief from studying. But, each year I saw our facilities deteriorate. First there was a lump in the Sports Cage floor on one court, which spread across three by the end of the year, and now covers five out of six Badminton courts. This isn’t safe to play on and students pay a lot of money to participate in sports at Aber. I believe for Aber students to truly excel at sports and represent Team Aber to the full, that our sports facilities need some investment beyond the gym so all students can safely participate.
