The Welsh Government announced today that the Financial Contingency Fund (FCF) is to be completely cut for the academic year 2014/2015. FCF is a fund available to UK domicile students to support them through crises and to prevent students dropping out of university through financial hardship.
The decision was taken due to increased pressures on Higher Education funding which has been squeezed in recent years due to UK government cuts. It is extremely regrettable that the axe has fallen on FCF.
We, as a University and Union, still have various funds available to students facing hardship through the kind donations of alumni and are placed to provide emergency cash in crises. These funds are considerably smaller than FCF but are available to all students, international or UK.
