On Tuesday 21st May, AberSU’s Student Officers travelled to the Senedd in Cardiff. The aim of their visit was to present the AberSU Housing Survey to the Welsh Assembly.

The Housing Survey, compiled from July-October 2012, aimed to gain an overview of the current accommodation issues in Aberystwyth’s private sector accommodation. In total over 300 responses were collected.

Welfare Officer Laura Dickens, who compiled the report, commented: “It’s fantastic that the Housing Minister and Assembly Members are getting involved. We’ve greatly increased the work we’re doing with the County Council on private sector issues, and things can only get better for our students.”

These developments with the survey tie in with a recent petition by AberSU, which urges the Welsh Assembly to review the poor standards and high rent of accommodation in Aberystwyth. Last week, the survey was reviewed by the Assembly’s Petitions Committee, and has now been passed to the Minister for Housing and Regeneration for comment.

The Students’ Union will soon be launching a new housing survey in order to collect more detailed data from students.
